The Canadian Cancer Society’s Research Information Outreach Team (RIOT) was established in London in 2010 by a group of volunteers who were passionate about spreading the word about the progress and promise in cancer research. The mapping of the human genome, advances in technology, and increasing collaboration among cancer researchers made this a time of unparalleled advancement in cancer research. The team consists of cancer researchers, cancer research trainees, community volunteers with communications, special event, and leadership skills, and a representative of the local Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) community office.
The London team plans its activities annually and spreads the word about the progress and promise in cancer research through a monthly column in the Londoner, videos such as the Bench to Bedside series, events like Ignite Cancer and Let’s Talk Cancer, speaking engagements, and social media postings.
London’s RIOT team has been recognized with the Canadian Cancer Society Community Impact Award and inspired the formation of teams in Kingston, Ottawa, Toronto, Windsor and Montreal.
